Effectively embracing change requires a healthy mindset. When we work on shifting our thought patterns in a more positive direction, we become better equipped to deal with change.

Tips from Psychologist Kim Schlüter

In the following video, Kim discusses:

• How positive thinking is not a fixed personality trait; it’s a skill that can be developed.

• How your self-talk affects your thinking patterns, and how to shift it in a more positive direction.

How to put your positive thinking cap on:

Take a moment to reflect on the good things in your life, big or small. It could be a supportive friend, a cup of coffee, or a sunny day. Feeling thankful can help shift your focus away from negativity and cultivate contentment.

Let go of resistance and judgement towards yourself and your life situation. Instead, try to find peace in the present moment and let go. You’ll find that accepting things as they are can help you feel more at ease.

Be kind to yourself, especially during tough times. Imagine talking to a friend who’s going through a hard time and offer yourself the same compassion and understanding. Being gentle with yourself can help you navigate challenging situations.

Be open to humour:

Give yourself permission to smile or laugh, even during difficult times. Seek humour every day and find ways to laugh at life – you’ll feel less stressed.

When you visualise a positive outcome, your brain creates new neural pathways, as if you were experiencing the situation in real life. So, when you repeatedly visualise a positive outcome, you train your brain to automatically respond more positively to future situations.

In the next lesson, we’ll explore how practicing mindfulness can help you cope with change.
